Successful summer of events: from typewriters to banjos

The Watch House held a number of successful events during the summer.

We’ve had very successful children’s craft activities on Tuesday, offered free by our wonderful facilitators. Many thanks to Julie, Denize and Cath for the activities which the children enjoyed so much. Keep an eye out for half term activities (I hear they may at least partly have a spooky theme...).

Thanks are due too to Sue, whose private collection of typewriters featured on our Vintage Typewriter Exhibition Day, which attracted Cullercoats locals and visitors from all over the UK and even America. Our wonderful home bakers took the opportunity to put on a spread of their famed cakes, scones and savouries. Many visitors were fascinated to find the machines they learned their typewriting on in their early careers, and the children enjoyed typing as well. Look out for the poems and comments typed on the day to appear in the Cullercoats Digital Story Map.

On 29th July we hosted Keith Alessi with his fabulous one-man show “Tomatoes tried to kill me but banjos saved my life”. Keith, a Canadian now living in the US, was on his way to The Edinburgh Fringe for the second time and wanted to hold his show in the North east to raise money for good causes. All the takings were donated to the watch House and we can’t thank Keith enough for a great show about overcoming adversity (and some banjo music!) and his generous contribution to our funds of all the takings.
