Meet some of our volunteers

Our volunteers are at the heart of the Watch House which is why it has its reputation for having a warm welcome to regulars and visitors alike. Here are some comments from some of our Volunteers whom you may meet when you visit us.

Yvonne helps out in the morning session of our Warm Welcome, and also runs our Meditation sessions and Silent Retreats. She says:

“Being a volunteer helps us rediscover what's important. It's not about being the best at anything. It's about sharing time, space and loving kindness. As a volunteer you might be the only person to share a kind word or a smile with someone. Imagine that for a second. What we give we get back in abundance.”

Alicia is a member of the Project Development Group with responsibility for Funding applications. She is also an excellent seamstress making a range of oven gloves, aprons, and coasters for us to sell. She says:

“Volunteering at the Watch House is enjoyable in every way. It’s a great group of friendly people from all walks of life. The building and heritage are fascinating in themselves and working on funding bids means I’m using my professional skills in making a real difference to securing its future.”

Catherine helps out at events, serving up tea/coffee and cake. She also makes the marmalade and jams we sell. She is related to the famous Joe Robinson of the Cullercoats Life Brigade, and is donating the most beautiful fish wife shawl to the Watch House. She says:

“I really enjoy volunteering at the Watch House, not only because it is part of my family history and the feel-good factor of helping raise money for its restoration, but the friendly welcoming vibe given when you walk in.

“I love meeting lovely visitors from near and far who have their own tales to tell. Volunteering has brought me many new friends; we do our bit to help AND have great fun doing it!”

If you fancy joining us as a volunteer please get in touch. There are lots of interesting tasks on offer, including: helping out organising and running events, interviewing, preparing the Heritage Hubs and developing the Heritage walks. We are always open to new ideas.

Our admin and maintenance teams could do with more volunteers if anyone is interested!
