What3words: Shaky, Finds, Rock

It’s not often that a place has quite such an appropriate what3words code to indicate its location. But there’s something very satisfying about three of the words used to locate Cullercoats Watch House on the North-East coast.

What3words have divided the world into 3m squares and given each square a unique combination of three words. Easier than map co-ordinates and more accurate than postcodes, what3words addresses are easy to say and share. They’re as accurate as GPS coordinates.  You can look them up on their website or on an app – useful when you’re out and about.

The Watch House is covered by about 18 of the 3m squares, but the one with the best name – in the middle of the building – is shaky.finds.rock

Rock is obvious, with the Cullercoats Watch House sitting on a rocky look-out point above Cullercoats Bay.  Finds is also a good word, as any visitor will discover many unique and interesting finds on their visit. There’s lots to find from stories of the past in our Heritage Hubs to our model of the Cutty Sark to the goods on offer at our craft fairs to the dolphins we regularly see from our windows and verandah.

When it comes to shaky, ok, the building isn’t shaky, nor is it falling down, but it is definitely looking a lot worse for wear, with much work needing to be done to secure the building for the future. This is why the group of trustees, volunteers, members and supporters are raising funds to repair and conserve the building inside and out.

The actual square containing the entrance to the Watch House is loops.powder.cakes.  Which is appropriate in its own way. I don’t know about loops and powder, but you can certainly find excellent cakes at the Watch House at most of the open events! Check out our events and open dates and fire up the what3words app to come and find us!
